I
grew up within the foreboding shadows of Nigerian military rule. In my early consciousness was the charismatic
Yakubu Gowon and then it was arrested by the mercurial Murtala Muhammed. Later on as
my intellect evolved and it was kept in suspense by the painstaking Olusegun
Obasanjo. Then came the hiatus of the civilian
administration of Sheu Shagari. The
aberration was short lived before the emergence of the no nonsense action
packed Muhammadu Buhari.
Action
was a byword for his administration, endless flow of initiatives, countless
policies and constant propelling towards a destination. Then there were no hints of cabals, lethargy or
any cluelessness masked as painstaking attention to detail. Illness did not get in the way of governance,
for he was fit as a fiddle and possessed the vitality that age of 40 placed
upon his lean frame.
Today,
we are faced with a different picture, our man President Buhari is in
captivity, laden with inordinate delays, burdened by complexity of governance,
shrouded by a cabal. He acts as if he
has more than 18 months left of his fitful tenure (In reality he has a 14 month window). On his War on Corruption, not one, not one
single person has been successfully convicted of political corruption.
All noise embroidered in motion without tangible results. On the economy, no radicalism, no innovation just starts and stops, reversals and the resort to long term borrowing to canopy short term loans. Foreign policy remains ill defined and too jaded. His management style hearkens to the imperial and the impervious with no evidence of change in sight.
The only bright spark in the administration, the Vice President, stands now eclipsed and relegated to the 2nd division of power. And yet with all these in our very own Nigeria, a 2nd term is what he deserves for our troubles.
