GAB - Adekunle Adewoye Fagbure BSc., FCA.
Today, we said farewell to my cousin Brother 'Kunle Fagbure at a well attended service numbering a mix of old and new, grey and black, with youth sprinkled with the matured. In the spacious auditorium of Shepard Hill Baptist Church, Obanikoro, Lagos we remembered a husband, father, brother, cousin and uncle. A few like my uncle the Dr B.A. Adigun (85 years old) defied tradition by attending the service and paying his respects. Prof Abiodun Alao of King's College, London, a first cousin flew in the day before...And royalty was not amiss with the traditional staff of office of the Olupon of Oluponna in Osun State featured prominently among the number.
With poignant elegance my niece, Aderinsola (his daughter) read out his biography, capturing the essence of the man hailed GAB by his contemporaries so numerous. No one, not a single one was left unmoved.
He was my mentor, friend and older cousin! His care and kindness for me permeated all his actions. His generosity in my affairs knew no bounds, his support for me never flinched. He was the first relative i sought out when i visited Nigeria whilst abroad. It was only the Saturday before he passed i held his hands and prayed with him with the solemn promise that I will be back later in the month of January, 19th for precision!
Now he marches victoriously into the heavenlies discarding his earthly and expendable body....I am remain devasted this night even though I know my joy will emerge at dawn....
I will miss you and our heartfelt discussions!
