Today marks the 55th anniversary of Nigeria's independence from Britain. We often make the refrain in our national anthem that our heroes past shall never be in vain, yet in the many years my generation has lived, we have grappled, faced and tried to fathom why each turn of governance appears to lead into a reoccurring cul de sac, why vanity seems to be what taints the achievements of our founding nationalists.
Today, however, I can only urge that when we are tempted to resile into thoughts of failure as a nation, in our capacity to meet present day challenges, we must rise up and summon inspiration demonstrating our capacity may well be limitless.
For today is is a time for Nigerian heroes and we must do what is hard and achieve what is great. For this is a time for present day heroes and we will reach for out for the galaxy of stars that cluster around us and move Nigeria into the stratosphere. May God bless this Federation of Nigeria.
